The Peoples Channel and Durham Community Media
Internship Opportunities

The primary goal of The Peoples Channel and Durham Community Media is to promote use of the designated access channel(s) by coordinating the use of the public access channel(s) and providing production facilities, and to provide technical assistance and media training to any individual, group, or organization interested in producing cultural, informational, entertainment, or educational media productions of interest to the community.

The Peoples Channel and Durham Community Media will provide Chapel Hill, Durham and the surrounding area residents, organizations, agencies and institutions with media training, equipment, production and related services on a first-come, first-served First Amendment basis.

Marketing Intern 

Description: Interns be exposed to the community access TV media environment and will learn about public access, media, development and outreach for Chapel Hill and Durham's only Public Access TV station. Interns will learn about how public television is supported and brainstorm ways to insure continued support.  Those students interested in marketing, nonprofit outreach, technology and community education and want some real world experience in a dynamic organization are encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern duties would include writing press releases and program highlights, setting up and maintaining media contact information, follow-up phone calls with media and supporters, maintaining press clip files, assist in general outreach, internet research for grassroots outreach outlets and program materials. Some duties would be on-going weekly tasks, others would be project-based depending on need.

Programming Intern

Description: Interns will assist The Peoples Channel and Durham Community Media staff in scheduling of series and one shot programming, assist in maintaining a Community Bulletin Board, and will assist in acquiring content relevant to the community.  Interns will learn state of the art server based broadcasting technologies and be an integral part of The Peoples Channel and/or Durham Community Media team.  Those interested in community technology, broadcast engineering, and community media who are looking for real world experience in a dynamic organization are encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILTIES: Review of local and non local programs, ingest content on broadcast servers and assist in maintaining the schedule. Cultivating relationships with independent producers and potential producers.  Participate in the development of Public Service Announcements. Maintenance of producer/program database information.

Community Coverage Intern

Description: Interns will be responsible for shooting, editing and producing content for The Peoples Channel 8 and Durham Community Media channel 18.  Interns will work to help nonprofits, community groups, and local government agencies to cover events and happenings which would be of interest to the community at large.  Interns will be trained on field production equipment and will have staff assistance to help produce packages.  Those interested in video production and media creation who are looking for real world experience in a dynamic organization are encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Keep an active eye on community events in the area and reach out to organizers for event coordination.  Shoot, edit and package each event for broadcast.  Work closely with Durham Community Media staff to identify and follow through covering important community events.
