Afrobaby = Success!
Thanks to everyone who showed up on that hot Friday night last week to drum and dance ‘til the wee hours. It was a smashing success; we raised funds and awareness at Durham Community Media, and we had the privilege of doing it the fun way.
Special thanks:
DJ CoryT, DJ DaRay, The Choc'ness Monster, Sam’s Quick Shop,
& Our Wonderful Volunteers!
We know Sed got some good photos that night, so keep an eye out for them on
our Facebook page.

We just got back from Pittsburgh, PA for the National Conference for the
Alliance for Community Media.

We had a great time, learned a lot, & met wonderful Access Minded individuals.
Here's a pic of Sed with the father of Public Access TV: George Stoney.

A message from Sed Miles, Dir. of Operations for DCM:
"Durham Community Media would like to say thank you for the awesome support from the community at this seasons public Durham City and County budget hearing. Because of your support and belief in public access media, were were able to get a small investment from the local government to help continue the growth of our public media channel. We are still well short of our operating goals but in such a seemingly impossible economic climate, we are extremely thankful for investment.

We would like to honor all of the other community serving groups that are also fighting to stay afloat, by continuing to be an open and free resource. DCM provides the opportunity for Durham residents, groups and organizations to freely broadcast media that will allow them to 1. Advocate 2. Entertain 3. Document 4. Educate 5. and Solicite support. Find out more by attending our twice monthly orientation meeting on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you there."

After many months of working with the Durham community, The Peoples Channel has finally secured a contract with the City of Durham to assist in programming a new public access channel. May 4th, channel 18 will become Durham's first public access channel not shared with government programming. Keep coming back as this process will change as we build our system and start providing more services to the community. For current producers, please read below. For more information contact Chad Johnston at (919) 960 - 0088.

Attention Durham Public Access Producers!

Time Warner Cable will no longer be operating the Public Access Channel after May 3rd, 2009.  The Peoples Channel will be managing the scheduling and airing of programs on channel 18 starting May 4th.  Programs for cablecast will need to be dropped off at the new location at 110 East Geer Street.  There will be a drop box in the rear of the building and programs can be dropped of 9am-5pm until further notice.

This transition will be implemented in 3 phases:

  1. Setting up the new broadcast system and honoring all current programs and time slots
  2. Setting up and opening the space for regular hours
  3. Working with the community to set and implement long term needs and goals

Updates will be given to the Access Producer’s Association, posted at the new facility and on The Peoples Channel’s web site, www.thepeopleschannel.org.

  1. Programs must be turned in by Thursday at 5pm for air time the following week.
  2. There will be new Request for Cablecast forms at the new location as well as on The Peoples Channel’s web site.
  3. Programs may also be dropped of at The Peoples Channel’s office in Chapel Hill, however please make sure you specify your program is for the Durham channel if you drop off after hours.
  4. Programs that were already turned in for cablecast next week have been given to The Peoples Channel and will be available for pick up as soon as the new facility is open to the public.
  5. Tapes and DVD’s will not be thrown away and if you need to retrieve them sooner, this can be done at the Chapel Hill office until further notice.
